Ford Ranger Tops Aussie Sales Charts Again | Check out our July Tax Time Ranger Fit
Australian Car Sales by Model | June 2026
Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux utes took the Gold and Bronze medals respectively in a record month for Australian new vehicle sales as measured by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (whose members do not include Tesla - Their Model Y accounted for 8072 of Tesla's deliveries, making it Australia's best-selling vehicle for June). VFACTS recorded 131,134 sales overall for June, which was seven per cent higher than June 2025, with a total of 140,058 vehicles. The highest monthly sales figure ever recorded in Australia!
BYD Sealion 7 clinching the Silver is a testament to the total 23.4% EV market share in June, close to a threefold increase in just six months. EV market share of new cars was only 8.4% in Australia back in January 2026.

When you include hybrids and plug-in hybrids, electrified vehicles accounted for 49.5% of all new sales in June!
The Big Picture: A Market in Transformation
The June result wasn't just a record. It was a statement. Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber described it as a "paradigm shift".
"The Australian automotive market has shifted on its axis during the first months of 2026. This year is likely to represent a significant turning point for the Australian automotive industry."
That shift is being driven by two major forces: the electric vehicle surge and the rise of Chinese brands.
Brand Battle: Toyota vs BYD - The Closest Finish in 25 Years
The brand-level story was even more dramatic.
Toyota held onto the top spot with 19,124 sales. But only just.
BYD delivered 18,881 vehicles just 243 units behind Toyota. It was the closest challenge to Toyota's dominance in roughly 25 years, and a clear signal that the Chinese EV giant is no longer a challenger. BYD is a genuine threat to Japanese dominance in the aussie market.
BYD's record result was helped by the arrival of the BYD Zhengzhou, a cargo ship carrying almost 5,000 vehicles that docked in early June. The brand's year-to-date total now sits at 52,335 units, up a staggering 124.1% compared to the same period in 2025.

China has now cemented its position as Australia's leading source of new vehicles, accounting for 46,592 VFACTS sales in June. That's 35.5% of the market.
Ford finished third with 9,181 sales, followed by Tesla with 8,670. That's the brand's best-ever month in Australia.
